Harold Laski (Manchester, 1893-London, 1950) is one of the few theorists of the State in the Anglo-Saxon world who, since John Stuart Mill, deserves to be remembered. His theories flourished in the transition from liberal thought to socialist action. He was a member of the famous Fabian Society, although he resigned from his position on the Fabian Executive Committee citing differences of opinion, as he did not accept the «gradualism» and evolutionary position of social democracy. He also served on the executive committee of the Labour Party, although there were serious disagreements with Prime Minister MacDonald, who had to study the changes brought about by socialist action after the First World War. His fame may have been favored by the fact that he taught at the prestigious universities of Mac-Gill in Montreal and Harvard. In any case, despite being a thinker who derives his theories from practice and gives his contributions a pragmatic content, like Hobbes or Locke, he cannot be compared with them in any way. He was, despite his challenges, an independent left-wing intellectual, a position he confirmed with his affiliation to the Labour Party. In this way, his political theory can be based on an ethics that, as can be seen, does not blend with Marxist historical materialism.
